Accenture and Google Cloud announced on September 8 a new Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group and a plan to “establish a 1,000 forward deployed engineer (FDE) workforce to accelerate AI value for enterprises globally.”
A forward-deployed engineer is not a researcher and not a salesperson. It is someone sent into a client’s business to rebuild a workflow around an agent and stay accountable for whether it works. The release’s own example is a customer-service deployment at YouTube that the companies say lifted customer sentiment 11 percent and cut average handle time 37 percent. Accenture says it already has nearly 50,000 Google Cloud-skilled people; this group is the one that goes on site.
The number to notice is not a thousand. It is the job description: know the business, know the tools, own the result.
For the valley: no one here is hiring a thousand of anything. But the hotel group in Indian Wells, the clinic in Palm Springs and the city hall in Cathedral City will each need one person who can do what those engineers do, and that person is more likely to be a manager who learned AI than an engineer who learned hospitality.
