Google moves source links higher in AI Search

·

Subjects: google-search · ai-mode · publishers

At a glance

  • Google says inline source links will appear higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews more often.
  • A new official-websites section is a test, not a universal Search feature yet.
  • Google is also expanding timely-article carousels and testing clickable publisher and creator profiles.

What changed

Google said October 15 that AI Mode and AI Overviews will show inline links higher in responses more often. It is also testing a dedicated section that can surface official websites at the top of an AI response with context about why each link is useful. Google is expanding timely-article carousels to more locations and languages and testing clickable creator and publisher names in AI Mode.

Google is adjusting the part of AI Search that publishers, businesses and website owners have been watching closely: the path from an AI-generated answer back to the open web.

In an October 15 product update, Google said it has made continued increases to inline links inside AI Mode and AI Overviews and is now showing those links higher in responses more frequently. Those are the links embedded directly in words or phrases while a person is reading an AI-generated answer.

Google is also testing a more explicit route to first-party information. For searches where there are one or two obvious official destinations, it plans to test a dedicated section at the top of an AI response that identifies those websites and explains why each link is useful. Because Google described this as a test, it should not be read as a feature that every business or publisher can expect to receive.

News discovery is changing at the same time. Google said the prominent carousels it uses for timely articles are beginning to roll out to additional locations and languages. Preferred Sources can appear in those carousels. Google also began testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode that lead to Search profiles.

None of this establishes that a higher source link will produce more referral traffic, or that an official website will be chosen over a third-party source. It does make the source layer of AI Search more visible than it was.

Why it matters here

Our read: For Coachella Valley and Inland Empire businesses and publishers, this strengthens the case for a clear first-party website with current, attributable information. It also gives AICV.news another reason to publish timely original reporting that can stand on its own as a source. The update does not establish that local sites will receive more traffic or higher placement.

One question worth testing

When an AI answer mentions a local business or story, which source does Google expose first: the official site, original reporting or a third-party profile?

  • Google did not publish a ranking formula or traffic forecast for these source-link changes.
  • The dedicated official-websites section and clickable publisher profiles are described as tests.
