Google launches Universal Cart across Search and Gemini

·

Subjects: google-shopping · agentic-commerce · shopify

At a glance

  • Universal Cart is now live in the U.S. across Google Search and the Gemini app.
  • It can combine products from multiple retailers and track price drops or restocks.
  • Supported purchases can use Google Pay or hand the shopper back to the merchant's own checkout; the merchant remains seller of record.

What changed

Google launched Universal Cart in the United States on October 15 across Search and the Gemini app. The cart can hold products from multiple retailers, monitor price or inventory changes, surface promotions and payment-card benefits, and support either Google Pay checkout with participating merchants or a transfer to the merchant's own cart. Google says the merchant remains the seller of record.

Google has moved one of its clearest agentic-commerce experiments from announcement to launch.

Universal Cart went live in the United States on October 15 across Google Search and the Gemini app. A shopper can save products from different merchants while using either surface and return to the same cart later. Google says the cart is built on its Shopping Graph, which contains more than 60 billion continually refreshed product listings.

The cart does more than remember products. Google says it can watch for price drops and items returning to stock, identify relevant promotion codes and use information from Google Wallet to help a shopper understand payment-card benefits.

The transaction path varies by merchant. Google says shoppers can check out with Google Pay inside the cart at many supported stores or transfer items into a merchant's own cart to finish the purchase on that site. The launch announcement names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart and Wayfair, along with many Shopify merchants. In either path, Google says the retailer remains the seller of record and handles confirmation and customer support.

Google first announced Universal Cart at I/O in May as part of a broader agentic-commerce stack that includes the Universal Commerce Protocol and Agent Payments Protocol. The October launch is the important change: the cart is now a consumer product in the U.S., rather than only a roadmap item.

Participation is not universal. Google's announcement does not say that every Shopify store or every retailer in Merchant Center automatically receives the same checkout capability.

Why it matters here

Our read: For Coachella Valley and Inland Empire retailers, the relevant shift is from being discoverable in an AI shopping answer to being reachable through an AI-assisted buying path. That makes product data, supported commerce integrations and the handoff to a merchant-owned checkout more important. It does not mean every local retailer is automatically available inside Universal Cart.

One question worth testing

For a local merchant already selling online, can Search or Gemini find the product, add it to Universal Cart and complete a supported handoff without losing the merchant as seller of record?

Not confirmed by us

  • Google did not publish a complete eligibility list for merchants or say that every Shopify merchant can use in-cart checkout.
  • Google's launch announcement covers the United States and does not establish availability in other markets.
