Meta, Sierra, Walmart, Stripe and Shopify announce a standard for personal AI agents

·

Subjects: personal-agents · oauth · agent-protocols

What changed

On October 6, Sierra announced Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard that Meta and Sierra are developing with Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. Sessions are built on OAuth: an agent can start as a guest, and when it needs a customer's account the customer signs in and chooses read-only or write access. Companies choose whether agents use their website, APIs or an agent of their own. Sierra plans a v0.1 spec this month; payments are a possible later extension. Sierra co-founder Bret Taylor told CNBC businesses have no reliable way to tell an AI agent from a person. CNBC also reports that Amazon has blocked Meta's Muse agent and that OpenAI and Anthropic are not taking part. Decagon separately open-sourced PACT, a consent protocol, and is joining the working group.

Why it matters here

Our read: Meta told CNBC Muse already has millions of U.S. users, and Sierra says most personal agents today use a company's website the way a person does. So an agent acting for a customer reaching a valley hotel, restaurant, clinic or shop is plausible now. The question for those businesses is whether their booking or inquiry system can tell such an agent from a person, and what it may do. The sources say nothing about small or local businesses, and no specification exists yet.

One question worth testing

Does the vendor behind your booking, ordering or inquiry form plan to support Personal Agent Protocol or PACT, and what happens today when an AI agent submits for a customer?

Not confirmed by us

  • The standard is described by its own sponsors. When we checked there was no published specification, license or governing body; Sierra says v0.1 is due later this month. We did not find Meta's own announcement, so Meta's role rests on Sierra's description and on CNBC's reporting.
  • The statements from Bret Taylor and Meta, the Amazon block and the absence of OpenAI and Anthropic come from CNBC's reporting as relayed by Quartz; CNBC's own page would not open for us. Meta's 'millions of U.S. users' is Meta's own figure as CNBC relays it. We did not read posts on X.
  • We cite only the participants named in Sierra's and Decagon's own posts; some press reports list others, which we did not confirm. Partner statements express support and do not commit anyone to ship.
  • Neither company post says whether Personal Agent Protocol and PACT will work together or compete, or how either relates to existing agent-commerce protocols. Payments are only a possible later extension in Sierra's post. We did not test or find any implementation.
