Shopify lets AI agents take shoppers through checkout
What changed
Shopify's October 13 release gives compatible AI agents one connection for finding products, building carts and completing authorized Shop Pay purchases. Shopify says its catalog contains more than a billion products. Search needs no API key; completing a purchase through the agent requires the shopper's confirmation.

A shopping assistant can now take a customer from a product search to an approved purchase through Shopify's Shop MCP connection.
MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is an interface that lets an AI application call external tools. Shopify's service combines 17 tools for product discovery, shopping, account access and orders. Its developer announcement is dated October 13; the service is available at mcp.shop.com.
The payment path matters. A shopper can use a merchant's checkout page without connecting a Shop account. With an account connected, an agent can use saved addresses and Shop Pay, but the shopper must confirm the total and payment method before the agent completes the purchase. A cart or checkout link alone does not establish that an order was placed.
This is not one combined checkout for every store. Shopify's documentation says each checkout belongs to a single merchant: products from three stores require three checkouts.
The connection also supports a separately approved card-payment path for stores outside Shopify. That capability requires a signed-in shopper; it does not grant an agent blanket permission to spend.
Our read: The consequential change is the connection between discovery and an authorized transaction. Whether a particular merchant's products can be found accurately, and whether its checkout works end to end, still needs testing.
